When one thinks of the strong curators of halftime drum and bass, footwork, autonomic hybrid bass music, and “slowfast” in 2016, many labels come to mind. Obviously, there are the heavy hitters: dBridge‘s Exit Records, Om Unit‘s Cosmic Bridge Recordings, Ivy Lab‘s 20/20 LDN, and the legendary Critical Music, but over the past few years, a couple other imprints have solidified themselves as consistent supporters of the sound. Flexout Audio, Vandal LTD, Aufected Recordings, and Diffrent Music have all become pillars of the scene with their unique and fresh take on drum and bass. It’s the latter of these labels that we’ll be featuring today: Diffrent Music. Label head Dexta has been a key player in the halftime community for years, since Diffrent’s inception in 2010 as a curator, and as a producer to watch out for since 2013. His productions are a DJ’s best friend: consistently dance floor friendly, exploratory, distinct, and accessible while retaining individuality. His curation of Diffrent has made it a dependable outlet for halfstep bass music whose releases would regularly populate the Beatport Top Ten for the genre, if such a thing existed. As it doesn’t, it will have to suffice to say that Dexta’s knack for discovering talent has placed Diffrent tunes in the DJ sets of the best in the game and has set the bar for quality in the genre. His contributions to the international bass music community are invaluable, and we couldn’t be more excited to have Dexta in the mix for the 16th installment of the Booms and Claps Mix Series.
The mix takes us on a journey through the full spectrum of the autonomic realm: deep rollers, footwork/juke, jungle, and of course, halftime heaters. Chock full of unreleased music from forthcoming Diffrent releases and legends like Danny Scrilla, J:Kenzo, dBridge, and others, there isn’t a dull moment on the journey. From the dark depths of GREAZUS‘s flowing bass tones to DJ Earl‘s frantic hi hats, Dexta really covers all the bases with this masterpiece. This sound is that of the future, and Dexta is at the forefront. Without further ado, I’m pleased to present BnC Mix 016: DEXTA.
