CloZee – The Poetic Assassin

October 31, 2013Zac Krohn

CloZee, is a 21 year old multi-instrumentalist and producer from Toulouse, France who began studying classical guitar at 11. Her education in music is highly apparent as she masterfully mixes beautiful acoustic melodies with skillful production. CloZee first caught my attention earlier this year with her remixes of Mr. Bill’s Cheyah and James Blake’s Retrograde. The former track placed 2nd in a contest held by Gravitas Recordings. As part of the prize for placing in that contest, Gravitas released CloZee’s newest EP, The Poetic Assassin, on October 29th. The Poetic Assassin takes you on an exciting journey through the imagination of this up-and-coming producer. CloZee uses elements of glitch, bass, flamenco guitar, classical, trip-hop and more to create this diverse release.

The title track, The Poetic Assassin, starts with a fast flamenco guitar loop overtop a chill beat. The song builds into a hard hitting Drum and Bass track, and then artistically mixes back in the guitar samples resulting in something truly spectacular. Earth To Nothingness feels simultaneously downtempo and upbeat. At times this song reminds me of Bonobo or Ratatat, at others it has hints that sexy West Coast lazer bass. Lantern Dance is a glitchy vocal dance floor track, that stands out as something a little different while still managing to mix with the other tracks seamlessly.

As they are known to do, Gravitas is graciously listing The Poetic Assassin under the Pay What You Want model on Bandcamp. We highly encourage you support this wonderful little label (and CloZee, of course) in any way you can. Pass them $1, share the tracks with a friend, open your windows and crank it loud!
