Over the past several years, as we grow older and pickier about music and life in general as a staff here at Booms and Claps, there are few festivals that have continued to impress us every year without fail. Whereas the 17 year old versions of ourselves were in “FESTIVAL EVERY WEEKEND ALL SUMMER LET’S DO THIS” mode, a festival really has to bring something special to the table for us to be interested enough to take the time off work and make the necessary sacrifices to get ourselves there nowadays. One of those festivals has captivated our interest and brought us back every year since its inception: Oregon’s What The Festival.
Located about 2 hours east of Portland near Dufur (yeah, it’s a weird name), What The Festival is a 4-day fiesta on a beautiful ranch complete with an absolutely breathtaking view of Mt. Hood that can be keenly viewed from just about anywhere on the festival grounds, including from the absolutely raucous day-time pool party stage which has featured performances in past years by everyone from Machinedrum to Opiuo to Claude VonStroke to Trippy Turtle.

The festival organizers are truly some of the best in the industry; the festival experience is held to an amazingly professional standard. Year after year, the lineup is phenomenal. Always featuring several bigger headliners (don’t worry, you’re not going to see Tiesto on the ranch) and a slew of the most cutting edge underground electronic artists in the game, What the Festival‘s lineup has consistently been well above par. The organizers’ attention to not only crafting a phenomenal music lineup, but to creating an aesthetically intriguing and welcoming space for their party-goers to enjoy the artists they book is also nothing short of impressive. The amount of love and effort that goes into this event shines through, and their commitment to the underground and to forward-thinking electronic music keeps us coming back every year.
As the summer approaches, and festivals start announcing their lineups, many of them have us at Booms and Claps questioning whether they’re worth our time this year. What The Festival, on the other hand, is a no-brainer. Released earlier this week, their lineup features heavy-hitters from all ends of the spectrum, including BnC favorites such as Tokimonsta, Snakehips, PRSN, Two Fresh, EPROM, Machinedrum, The Librarian, Stwo, and so many others.
